Systems depending on the use of two or more machines.-Relates to a hydro-electric generating station comprising several turbo-generator units of which, when it is not necessary to run all the units as generators, some of those not required for the external supply of electricity are used to generate current by which others are driven as motors, the latter then pumping water to a reservoir and thereby storing energy in the form of a head of water for subsequent use, and consists in providing that the hydraulic part of each turbo-generator unit when working as a pump is caused to run at a different speed from that at which it runs when working as a turbine. This may be obtained by the use of change-speed gears between the two elements, and when the electric element is an alternating current machine, its speed can be varied by altering the number of effective poles or by a cascade arrangement.
