Abstract

Driving arrangements.-In a steam power plant comprising a reciprocating engine driving a main shaft, e.g. a propeller shaft b, and an exhaust turbine d, the power of which is transmitted to the main shaft through helical double reduction gearing e, f, g, and an elastic coupling i, the steam thrust of the turbine is taken up by the pinion on its shaft, the thrusts of the wheel and pinion on the intermediate shaft z are arranged to balance one another, and the thrust on the final wheel g is transmitted to the main shaft b, which is provided with a thrust bearing c. In Fig. 2, the sleeve h of the wheel g engages a collar on the shaft b. This thrust bearing may be modified when the turbine is capable of being uncoupled, so that it will transmit thrust in either direction.
