Abstract

486,395. Steam-power plant. BAUER, G. Oct. 27, 1937, No. 29385. Convention date, May 3. [Classes 110 (iii) and 122 (iii)] In a multi-stage steam-engine plant with intermediate superheating, a part or the whole of the live steam before it enters the H.P. stage is first highly superheated in a separatelyheated heater and is then passed through an intermediate superheater or several seriallyconnected intermediate superheaters through which the engine working steam passes, separated from the live hot steam, from one stage to the next below. In the three cylinder marine engine with exhaust turbine shown, the supply is first byepassed through a separately-heated superheater 11 and heated to 400-500‹ C. or more. This supply is controlled by a valve 12 and is led through an intermediate superheater 14 before passing to the H.P. cylinder by pipe 15. The steam from the I.P. cylinder 2 to the L.P. cylinder 3 passes in counter-current manner through the superheater 14. The superheater 11 is connected to the live steam pipe by valved branches 17, 18 with a valve 20 between them. The superheaters can be cut out and the engine worked with boiler steam. The valves 12, 19, 20, 23 may be set to supply steam direct and also through the superheaters. In a modi. fication, a superheater is also arranged between the H.P. and I.P. cylinders. In this case the first intermediate superheater is heated by steam and the second by combustion gases from the heater 11. In a third construction, the intermediate superheaters are heated by steam. These may be cut out and the cylinders directly connected. The primary superheater may be heated by liquid fuel or by the exhaust of an internal-combustion engine. The exhaust from the cylinder 3 passes to a turbine 4 which through a hydraulic coupling 5 and a doublewheel reduction gear 6 ... 9 drives the screw shaft 10 in common with the reciprocating engine.
