Compound and multiple expansion engines.- A boiler for locomotive and like engines comprises a high-pressure fire-box section and a low pressure smoke-tube or like section, the high and low pressure) steam being led to the corresponding stages of a reciprocating engine or turbine. The high-pressure generator may be heated indirectly by the circulation of steam generated in tubes in the fire-box. High-pressure steam is generated in a drum e above a locomotive fire-box by circulating steam from tubes d in the fire-box through coils h in the drum. The steam is superheated in a fire-tube superheater C and supplied to the high-pressure stage E of the engine. Low pressure steam generated in the fire-tube section B is superheated in a fire-tube superheater D and supplied to the lowpressure stage F of the engine. Steam may blow off from the drum e through a tube u into the section B. The high-pressure boiler may be fed with water from the low pressure boiler. Exhaust from the high-pressure stage passes through a pipe o into the supply pipe p of the low-pressure stage ,a non-return valve x being fitted to prevent the exhaust from passing back into the lowpressure superheater.
