Compound engines; steam supply, methods of. -In a locomotive having a compound engine 23, a high pressure boiler A forming the walls of the firebox, and a multitubular low pressure boiler or feed heater B, interstage steam is heated in a heater 19 by high pressure steam superheated in tubes 13 arranged wholly or in part in the flue C leading from the firebox to the low pressure boiler or feed-heater. The superheater is protected from the high temperature furnace gases by boiler tubes 8 extending across the flue. The heating steam after leaving the interstage heater is again superheated in tubes 14, also arranged wholly or in part in the flue C, before passing to the high pressure cylinder. Low pressure steam is led into the interstage heater through a pipe 26 to mix with the high pressure exhaust led into the heater through a pipe 24.
