Abstract

306,098. Schmidt'sche Heissdampf- Ges. Feb. 15, 1928, [Convention date]. Heating by indirect contact of steam.-In a steam generator 2, Fig. 1, heated by steam passed alternately through superheating coils 8 and immersed heating coils 9, the heating steam is the working steam from the generation or from a separate boiler, the steam being taken from the last heating coil to an engine or heatexchanger. Steam from the generator 2 is led through a superheating coil 21. The superheating coils may be placed in the combustion chamber of a return-tube boiler 1. The exhaust steam from a compound engine 23, 24 driven by high pressure steam from the generator is taken into the pipe 11 supplying steam from the return-tube boiler to the engine 26, 27. At starting up, water is supplied to the first superheating coil 8 by a branch 14 to generate steam, and the last heating coil is connected by a branch 15 to a condenser. Water is supplied to generator from the boilers by a pump 19. In a modification, the superheating elements are arranged as walls around the combustion chamber of an externally fired multitubular boiler. In another modification, the superheating elements are placed in the firebox and flue tube of a boiler of the locomotive type. The heating steam may be taken from the indirectly heated generator 2, Fig. 4, itself, and the superheating elements 52 may be placed around the walls and at the bottom of a separate combustion chamber 48, from which the gases pass downwardly over superheating and feed heating coils 55, 62, 64. The whole of the steam from the generator 2 may be taken through the superheating elements and the heating coils and finally superheated in the flues of a fired boiler, and part of this steam may be allowed to pass into the boiler water.
