Abstract

9660. Cusack, E., and Morton, W. H. April 24. Sinuous-tube superheaters; controlling superheaters. - Relates to a superheater for locomotive and like boilers, of the kind in which superheating-tubes are situated in a heating- chamber placed above the boiler and connected with the fire-box by tubes passing through the steam-space. The superheating-tubes 12 are connected to a chamber 8 divided longitudinally to form saturated and superheated steam compartments 9,10. Tubes 5 secured to the fire-box crown and to the outer fire-box casing conduct furnace gases into the heating-chamber, the lower part of which is formed by the top of the firebox casing and the boiler shell. The steamoutlet pipe 18 is enclosed by a casing 20, which places the heating-chamber in communication with the smoke-box. The pipe 18 is provided with a valve 19 regulating the admission of steam to the cylinders. An injector 22 in the casing 20 controls the passage of gases through the heating-chamber. The casing 20 may be placed in communication with the chimney or with the lower part of the fire-box.
