Abstract

20,400. Solomiac, E. Sept. 13. Water - tube boilers; superheaters, steam; feedwater, heating; tubes, water.-Within the one casing are contained the boiler proper comprising substantially - v e r t i c a l tubes connecting horizontal drums, superheaters, an air-heater for heating the air for primary combustion, and a feedwaterbeater, the four arrangements being located in the order named with regard to the direction of the products of combustion. The drums 1 are in communication with each other through tubes 2, 3 and with the upper drums 4,5 through large return tubes. The sides and crown of the fire-box and combustion chamber are composed of water-tubes 13, 14 which may be mounted in pairs to form 0-shaped systems, or in fours to form 00-shaped systems, as shown in Fig. 8. The tubes 13, 14 communicate through pipes 20, 21, the former permitting the escape of steam to the drum 4, and the lower causing the entry of water from drum 1 into the flared end of the tube 13. The superheaters 22 consist of straight tubes connecting headers, and may be utilized as auxiliary boilers by a manipulation of suitably-arranged cocks. The air for combustion passes down the passage 33 and through the tubes 32 to the furnace, which may also be supplied directly with cold air. The feed-water may be supplied to the drum 2 either directly by the pipe 11, or after being heated in the straight pipes 36 arranged in the flue space i.
