WATER-TUBE MARINE BOILER.
Application filed May 27, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARIO VALLINO, a subject of the King of Italy, and residing at No. 6 Via Napoli, Genoa, lltaly, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Tube Marine Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved water tube marine boiler of the type wherein two transversely arranged upper steam and water drums are connected to each other and also to two transversely arranged lower water drums, by means of groups or bundles of tubes lo- 'cated above the combustion chamber.
In the improved steam boiler means are provided, whereby the heat which would otherwise escape to waste through the chimney, is utilized for heating the feed water.
This invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical cross section of one form of the improved boiler, and Fig. 2 is a rear elevation, partly in section thereof. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the top rear drum with feed water connection.
As shown, 2 is an upper steam and water drum located transversely at the front of the boiler, and 3 is an upper transverse steam and water drum located at the back of the boiler. These two drums are connected to each other by a group of tubes 5 and also by two pipes 11. 1 and 17 are lower water drums located transversely and respectively at the front and back of the boiler. The upper drum 2 is connected to the lower drum 1 by tubes 6. The upper drum 3 is connected to the lower drum 1 by diagonally arranged tubes 4 and to the lower drum 17 by tubes 14.
The two lower drums 1 and 17 are connected to each other by two pipes 15.
The boiler is incased in a steel casing 16 covered with asbestos, in the upper part of which is an outlet-13 for the smoke gases.
The groups of tubes 5 may be worked as an economizer when the feed water is in jected cold under the plate 8; and they may be worked as a steam generating group when the feed water is injected outside the plate 8.
The rear top drum is fitted with a twoway water connection by which the feed watar is directed to the pipe under the plate a Specification of Letters Patent.

r or outside the said plate by means of the two valves in the valve box 18.
The circulation of the water in the improved boiler is as follows :The circulation commences by the water rising from the lower'drum 1 to the upper drum 3 through the tubes 4 owing to these tubes receiving the direct heat from the fuel on the grate 12. The steam generated in thetubes 4 collects in the space 10 in the upper drum 3. The water passes from this drum 3 underneath the plate 8 and through the tubes 5 into the upper drum 2. From this latter drum the water descends through the tubes 6 (which are least exposed to the heat of the furnace) into the lower drum 1. l/Vith this course of the circulation, and when the feed water is injected into the boiler outside the plate 8 through the pipe 7*, the tubes 5 will operate as steam-generating tubes, and the improved boiler will work like any other boiler without an economizer, because in such a case the temperature of the water flowing through the tubes 5 will be the same as that of the body of the water in the boiler. The steam generated in the tubes 5 will collect in the space 9 in the upper drum 2 which is in communication by means of the pipes 11 with the space 10 of the upper drum 3. If, however, the feed water be first injected into the upper drum 3 by means of the pipe 7 which leads it directly under the plate 8, then the tubes 5 will operate as economizer tubes because the feed water in mingling with the hot water which is carried by the natural current of the boiler water through the tubes 5, will form a mixture of water of lower temperature than that contained in the other parts of the boiler. The temperature of the tubes 5 will therefore be lowered and the surfaces of these tubes will become more effective by their contact with the hot gases passing to the chimney 13, owing to the increased difference between the temperature of the said surfaces and that of the hot gases, which could not occur in the first mentioned arrangement. This increased effectiveness will produce the higher efficiency of the improved boiler which is the object of this invention.
Having now described my invention what ll claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a. water tube steam boiler of the type hereinbefore specified, the Combination with a rear transverse upper steam and Water drum, and a front transverse upper steam and water drum of connecting tubesexposed to the hot furnace gases, connecting the water space of said rear upper drum with the water space of said front upper drum, a chamber in the water space of said rear upper drum inclosing the orifices of said connecting tubes, and feed water supply pipes for delivering into or outside the said chamber, whereby said connecting tubes are enabled to operate if desired, as the tubes of an economizer for heating the feed water before delivering same into said front upper drum;
2, In a water tube steam boiler of the type hereinbefore specified, the combination with a rear transverse upper steam and water drum, and a front transverse upper steam and water drum, a lower water drum, water tubes located directly over the fire, extending diagonally from the water space of said rear upper drum to said lower water drum,
pipes connecting the steam space of said rear upper drum with the steam space of said front upper drum and down tubes connecting the water space of said front upper drum With said lower drum, of connecting tubes exposed to the hot furnace gases, connecting the water space of said rear upper drum with the water space of said front upper drum, a chamber in the Water space of said rear upper drum inclosing the orifices of said connecting tubes, and feed water supply pipes for delivering into or outside the said chamber, whereby said connecting tubes are enabled to operate if desired as the tubes of an econolnizer for heating the feed water before delivering same into said front upper drum.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
