Be it known that I, PERCY 'W. BURKE, a
citizen of' the United States, residing at Chi-- cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water. Tube Circulating Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.

In order to utilize all the heat it is possible to get from the fuel I provide for boxing in the fire by means of circulating water tubes connected by return-bends and detachable union-tee coupling devices. The blow-0E pipe E, at the rearand about mid way betweenthe side walls of the furnace, is provided witha cross coupler f, f, to which are connected the two ends of pipe of two circulating sections or groups of coils F-F, forming one section, and FF forming the other l a section. The section F-F is continued from the grate level up the left hand side wall to the top of the fire level and is there turned inward by a pipe-connection gin the front smoke box and connects with the front end of boiler A below the water line. In a similar manner the section FF is extended, forming a lining for the right hand wall of the. furnace and connecting by pipeg with boiler A. The pipes of the coil sections are preferably connected together in pairs at the front end by returnbends h of malleable iron, and at the rear end by union-tee coupling devices and nuts Z, the ends of the tees being closed by brass screw-plugs m as shown in Fig. at. The nuts Z are, in practice protected by asbestos cement as they are the only parts not directly watercooled where exposed to the fire or hot products. By means of the union-tees, repairs may be readily made. By taking apart two unions, two tubes and one return-bend may be lifted out from the hook plate support H at the side wall, and then new tubes can be screwed into the return bend and connected by the union-tees, thereby quickly repairing any part of a section and placing into operative condition.
The rocking bars of the grate C are supported at the ends by side rails L secured to the walls, and the tops of the bars are placed below the centers of the pipes of the horizontal coil F for better shaking out ashes and, also to make a corrugated grate surface. The water flowing through the pipes keep them comparatively cool, so that the coal will not clinker and mat on the grate.
lVater being supplied to the boiler A through feed pipe D, it will flow down through pipe E and fill the circulating coils F, F F until it is discharged through pipes g into boiler A. and the latter will be filled to the desired water level. The furnace being properly fired the main boiler and circulating coils will all be heated and water will be circulated from boiler A through pipe E and all of the coils back into the boiler at the connections 9. On account of the large number of coils, circulation will be quite rapid and water which is heated in any one pipe will be still more highly heated in the next adjoining pipe and so on through the system, thereby promoting rapid circulation and rapid generation of steam. On account of this rapid circulation the plates of boiler A will be kept at a comparatively low temperature and thereby prevented from warping or bagging as often occurs where circulating coils are not used. By means of the rapid circulation all scale making material will be passed with the water down through the blow-off pipe E and will be blown off when desired by opening valve 6. The boiler will thus be kept clean. By utilizing the heat that would otherwise be lost upon the brick walls and bottom of the furnace back of the bridge Wall, I save at lea st thirty per cent. of the heat of the fuel which would otherwise be lost.
By reason of the increased heating surface and rapid circulation of the water no force draft is necessary and therefore more perfect combustion of the fuel is obtained so that the boiler serves materially in abating the smoke nuisance. On account of slower and more perfect combustion no smoke will be thrown off from the boiler in the effort to obtain the maximum steam generating capacity.
It will be evident that my improved circulating coils may be readily fitted to an old fire-tube boiler thereby greatly increasing its steaming capacity at a small expense. The advantages above enumerated have been demonstrated by practical ope ation of my boiler.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. The combination with a fire-tube steamboiler, of a blow-off pipe connecting with the bottom at the rear end of the same and extending down through the smoke chamber back of the bridge wall and having a valve, a flat horizontal coil or serpentine at the grate level and extending approximately the width and length of the fire-box and smoke chamber and having connection by two pipes with said blow-off pipe for feeding water to the coils, a vertical coil or serpentine lining the wall on each side of the fire-box and smoke chamber and connecting with said fiat coil, and, on opposite sides, with one end of the fire-tube boiler, and a shaking grate having the bars thereof placed between the water-tubes of the horizontal coil, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a furnace having a bridge wall, a lire-box in front thereof and a smoke chamber to the rear end of the furnace, of a fire-tube steam boiler set in the top of the furnace, a blow-off pipe connecting with the bottom at the rear end of the boiler and extending down through the smoke chamber, a flat horizontal coil at or near the grate level, extending through the area of the fire-box and smoke chamber and connecting by two pipes with said blow-01f pipe for receiving feed water therefrom, a vertical coil or serpentine covering each side wall to the fire line and connecting with the front end of the tubular boiler below the water line, the pipes of said coil or serpentine being connected in pairs at one end by return-bends and in pairs at the opposite end by union tee coupling devices, whereby any pair may be removed and replaced readily, for preparing the coil, the construction being such that the fire and hot products are boxed in on four sides by means of water circulating devices for economizing heat, substantially as described.
8.
