SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,017, dated November 27, 1894.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. I. CLAUDON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Glenwood Springs, in the county of Garfield and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Water-Heaters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, which will enable others skilled in. the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,- reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to sectional tubular steam boilers and water heaters, and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efficiency in use. 1 The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a steam boiler constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a front end view, the cast iron front being removed. Fig. 3 is a similar view, the front being in place. Fig. 4. is a perspective view of the waterjacket, detached.
In the said drawings the reference numeral 1 designates the casing of the generator or heater, being shown in the present instance as composed of fire-brick, although it may be made of cast-iron, or other material,if desired. The front of this casing consists of a castiron plate or plates, 2, provided with doors 3 for cleaning out purposes, a door 4 leading to the fire-box, and an ash-pit door 5. Located in the horizontal portion of the casing are a number of Water-pipe sections, (five being shown in the present instance,) each consisting of a series of slightly inclined longitudinal water-tubes 6 connected at their rear ends to vertical manifolds 7, which in turn communicate by means of pipe 8, with a steam dome 10, provided with flow-pipes 12. At their front ends these tubes 6 are provided with elbows 13 with which are connected vertical tubes 14; the lower ends of which are connected with inclined manifolds 15, approximately triangular in cross section. in the masonry of the casing, and supported thereby, is a rectangular water-jacket 16, the inner walls of which form the sides of the fire-box. The front of this jacket is formed with an opening 17, which is closed by the fire-door. The upper front side of thewaterjacket is connected with the front manifolds 15, by means of elbows 18, and nipples 19. At the lower front end the jacket is provided with holes 20 provided with sockets 21 in which fit removable screw-plugs 22; the object of the holes or openings being to remove There are also holes at the sides of the jacket near the lower part thereof, with which are connected return tubes 23 connected with the return pipes of the radiators. When used as a water heater one of these return tubes may be connected with an elevated tank, (not shown,) by which water is suppliedto the jacket. The inner walls of the jacket are corrugated, as shown, so as to afford an extended fire surface.

The operation is as follows: The tubes and water-jacket are supplied with water and a fire started in the fire-box heating the Water in the water jacket, and the products of co mbustion passing around and between the front manifolds and the water-tubes will impart a high heat thereto whereby steam is quickly generated which passes off to the steam-dome. It will be noted that the wall 25, of the furnace, below the horizontal tubes extends from the fire-box to near the rear end of the casing forming a flue 26 leading to the chamber 27. After the products of combustion pass between and around the water tubes, they escape through flue 26 down to the chamber 27, and from thence through exit-flue 28 to the smoke-stack, (not shown.)
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is.-
1. In a sectional steam generator or waterheater, the combination with the inclined horizontal water-tubes, the rear vertical manifolds connected therewith, the vertical watertubes connected with the front ends of said inclined tubes and the inclined manifolds with which said vertical tubes are connected, of the water-jacket forming the sides of the fire-box, having openings in its sides at the casing forming a flue at said end, the charm her below said wall and the exit flue at the rear end of the casing below said horizontal Wall, substantially as described.
