LOCOMOTlVE-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,648, dated. July 26, 1892.
Application filed November 30, 1891- Serial No. 413,544. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, LEWIS W. LESTER, a citizen of the United States,and a resident of Glencoe, in the county of McLeod and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotive-Boilers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of the invention in longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 2 is a transverse verticalsection.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in steam-boilers especially adapted as 1ocomotive-boilers; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter specified.
In the accompanying drawings the letter A designates the fire-box, located under the front portion of the boiler B. Leading from the fire-box along under the boiler is the external flue 0, opening at its rear end into a smoke or combustion chamber D at the lower rear portion of the boiler, the top wall of which is formed by the crown-sheet D and the front wall bya half flue-sheet E, carrying the lower internal fiues at, opening into said chamber. At their front ends these fiues open into a smoke or combustion chamber F. Leading from the upper portion of this chamber are the fluesb in the upper half of the front fluesheet. At their rear ends these fiues open into a smoke-box G, which extends across the entire rear of the boiler. Under the lower portion of the chamber F is the water-space f,
municating with a water-space K between the lower portion of the rear flue-sheet k, in the upper half of which are the flues b, and the rear wall of the chamber D. Passages 7c are also provided from the waist of the boiler into said jacket, so that a free circulation of water is maintained through the whole. This jacket serves to protect all parts which are exposed to great heat, and also serves to retain and utilize the heat which would otherwise escape by radiation from the external flue, fire-box, and the lower boiler-surface. The gases of combustion passing from the firebox through the flue 0 not only come in contact with the boiler-surface, but with the wator-jacket, passing to the chamber D, where still further combustion takes place, thence through the fines a to chamber F, thence into the fiues b to the smoke-box G and to the smoke-stack G, thus passing twice through the waist of the boiler and once externally thereof, utilizing a maximum per cent. of the total heat. The feed-water entering the drum H looses a large part of its sediment, becoming heated by the gases in chamber F,which have free circulation on three sides thereof, and discharging at the mouth of the pipe g in a considerably-heated state, thus effecting a saving of fuel. The upper flues b, passing through the steam-room, also serve to dry and superheat the steam.
N is a door for the purpose of removing cinders from chamber F, and M the door of the fire-box.
M is a door to the smoke-box G.
The various parts are made secure by staybolts, and longitudinal stay-bars may be employed wherever necessary. The smoke and combustion chambers, as well as the muddrum and water-jacket, are provided with hand-holes and mud-plugs to facilitate their cleansing.
It will be observed that the terms front and rear as herein used are employed in the manner customary in speaking of boilers and furnaces wherein the end having the furnace-door is termed the front end and the opposite end the rear end.
Having described this invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a steam-boiler, the combustion-chambers D and F, located at the respective end portions of the boiler, the former being partially inclosed thereby, the external flue 0, leading to the chamber D, and the internal flues a and b, and a smoke-box G, extending along the entire rear of the boiler and into which lead the upper fiues, the parts being so arranged that the gases of combustion are caused to pass first from the fire-box externally of the boiler to the chamber D, thence through the flues a to the chamber F, and thence through the fines b to the smoke-box G, and a mud and heating drum for the feedwater within the chamber F and secured to the front wall thereof, whereby it is subjected on three sides to the gases in said chamber, substantially as specified.
2. A steam boiler having a combustionchamber F at its front portion and communicating with the upper and lower flues and a mud and heating drum for the feed-water within said chamber and secured to the front Wall thereof, whereby itis subjected on three sides to the gases in said chamber, substantially as specified.
3. A boiler having a combustion-chamber D at its lower rear portion, into which open the lower lines, a smoke-box G, extending across the entire rear of the boiler and separated from the chamber D at its lower portion by a water-chamber forming a part of the water-jacket-, an external flue leading from the fire-box to the chamber D, a second smoke or combustion chamber at the front, into which open both the upper and lower fines, and a mud and heating drum for the feed-water in said chamber and secured to the front wall thereof, substantially as specified.
