230,935. Marine & Locomotive Superheaters, Ltd., and Boyes, F. A. Dec. 22, 1923. Coiled and sinuous tube superheaters.-In steam generators of the kind in which the sides and top of the firebox or furnace are covered with water and superheating pipes are located in the fire box, the superheater is arranged with inlet extended through the fire box crown into the steam space with open communication therewith and the outlet delivers to a collecting chamber in valvecontrolled communication with the engine. The superheater elements 15 are placed in the fire box immediately over an arch 14 and have limbs 15<a>, 15<b> secured to couplings on the upper plate 2 from which couplings project tubes 16a, 16<b> which are connected respectively with the transverse saturated steam collector 17 and superheated steam collector 18, which are situated in the steam space. The header 17 has holes forming open communication for the steam, and the header 18 has pipes 26 leading from its ends to the steam dome 8 which is separated from the steam space by the plate 28. The headers may be formed from tubes or castings and are supported by inverted Tee brackets 29. In a modification, two saturated and two superheated steam headers are employed and are placed adjacent to the sides of the steam space. In a further modification, the rising pipes are led through the top corners of the firebox and the unions are protected by fire-brick casings. The headers may be placed outside the steam space. To maintain a circulation in the superheater when steam is shut off from the engine, a blower or ejector may be connected to the chamber 8.
