Abstract

230,102. Bell, J. E. Jan. 13, 1923, [Convention date]. Straight-tube superheaters.-A boiler furnace of the kind described in Specification 209,764 has a combustion chamber provided with a depending baffle incorporating water or steam superheating tubes of the boiler and adapted to guide the flames through an elongated U-shape path. The boiler comprises a steam-and-water drum D, Fig. 1, connected by tubes D' to headers D<2> and D<3>. These are connected by vertical tubes D<4>, D<40> , D<14> to lower drums D<5>, D<6> and headers D<60>. The lower drums D<5>, D<6> are also connected to a drum D<9> by tubes D<7>, D<8>, forming a cooling-screen for ashes &c. passing downwards into the ash-pits A<9>. Depending from the drum D is a hollow baffle formed by the drum D<11>, bent tubes D<10>, straight tubes D<13>, and tiling E provided with apertures E<1> for the admission of air to the combustion chamber A. The drum D" communicates with the drum D<9> by external pipes D<15>. Steam-superheated units K are incorporated in the side walls of the combustion chamber. A modification of the hollow baffle depending from the drum D, Fig. 9, is formed as a steam-superheater comprising two sets of tubes K<10> connected at their lower end to an outlet header K<11> and at their upper ends to headers K<12> supplied with steam from the drum D through connections K<13>. The superheater tubes are encased in cast iron sections K<14> arranged between bricks K<15>, the enlarged heads of which abut against angle bars K<16>. Tiles K<17> protect the header K<11> and lower parts of the tubes.
