Abstract

632,011. Water-tube steam boilers; superheaters. SUPERHEATER CO., Ltd., and SOUTHCOTT, L. C. Jan. 8, 1948, No. 606. [Classes 123(ii) and 123(iii)] In a steam boiler with separately-fired 'steam-generating and superheating furnaces 1, 2 which are separated by a partition of water tubes 6, combustion gases from the furnace 2 flowing through the spaced upper ends of the tubes 6 to the furnace 1 and thence with the gases from the furnace 1 through the main bank 3 of the steam-generating tubes to a common outlet, the superheater comprises a radiantlyheated section, with the tubes 9, 11 thereof lining the walls of the lower portion of the furnace 2, and an elevated convection section comprising elements 14 each in the form of superposed horizontal tube loops. 'The two sections may be connected in series or in parallel, with the direction of steam flow in the convection section either wholly or partly parallel with, or counter to that of the gas. In the construction shown, saturated steam from the upper boiler drum 5 flows downwardly through radiantly heated tubes 9 to a lower header 10 from which similar tubes 11, interspersed among the downflow tubes 9, lead to the convection section 14, the upper portions 12 of the tubes 11 being bent into a substantial horizontal plane, to extend across the furnace, and connected by return bends 13 to the lowermost tube lengths of said section 14, and the uppermost portions 16 of the elements 14 being upturned to pass through the upper wall of the furnace for connection to a superheated steam header 17. The tubes 11 may line the lower part of the partition 6, and additional cooling of the side wall of the furnace 2 may be effected by water tubes 60 extending between the drum 5 and the lower drum 4. The elements 14 are braced by bands &c. 15 and are suspended from external supports, not shown, above the furnace. Specification 480,536 is referred to.
