U-tube and like superheaters.-A steam generator has a superheater 10 provided in a fire-box chamber 1 which is bounded by the water or steam receiving means 6 in the upper part of the fire-box, the upper end parts of the water tubes 3 connected to said means 6, the outer shell or casing 2, and the front and rear end plates. Openings or spaces are provided between the upper end parts of a number of the tubes 3 towards and at the rear wall of the fire-box to permit the passage of furnace gases into the rear end of the chamber in which the superheater is located, and tubes 9 connect the front end of the superheater space and the smoke-box. The side walls of the fire-box comprise an inner wall of tubes 3 connected between a water chamber 4 and a drum 6 forming an extension of the main portion of the boiler, and an outer wall of tubes 18, flattened in croessection, connected to a water chamber 19 forming an extension of the main portion 7 of the boiler, and to the water chamber 4. The superheater comprises a casting 12 provided with saturated and superheated steam chambers 13 and 14 respectively, connected by the ends of bent U- shaped tubes 10, 10<a>. In a modification these U-tubes are straight and lie longitudinally of the boiler and have their ends kinked as at 10<c>, Fig. 6, to facilitate the removal of any tube. The superheater steam chests 12 are provided with removable cover plates 7, and each superheater is connected independently to an engine cylinder. Dampers are provided at the smoke box end of the tubes 9.
