Dampersfor controlling superheat.-The combustion chamber at the rear of a return-tube boiler is divided by a central wall 17 and vertical baffles 16 to form central compartments 9 into which open the furnace flues 12 and from which the main part of the gases flow through the central return flue tubes 20 to the smoke box 15, the other part of the gases passing under the control of dampers 19 through side compartments 18 containing superheaters 4 and then through the side return tubes.
