Smoke-tube superheaters ; U-tube superheaters. -A A return-tube boiler is provided with a primary superheater consisting of tubes 2 projecting from headers in the smoke-box into the boiler smoketubes 3, and with a secondary superheater 7 arranged in the external return or combustion chamber 17. The tubes of the secondary superheater are protected from the direction action of the furnace gases by a wall at the end of the furnace flue, and they may be arranged in three groups connected to headers which are so connected that the steam flows first through the side groups and then through the central group. By opening a valve 16, boiler steam is admitted directly to the inlet compartments in the headers 10 of the side tube groups of the secondary superheater.
