Abstract
466,243. Water - tube steam boilers. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. (Babcock & Wilcox Co.) Sept. 11, 1936, No. 24842. [Class 123 (ii)] Steam superheater plant applicable for marine installations and used to superheat steam from an independently fired boiler comprises a combustion chamber 11 with high and low side walls 12, 13, and a closed bottom wall 14 upwardly inclined towards the low side wall, a superheater 18, and a boiler for protecting the walls and superheater comprising an inclined water-tube bank 27 between a water drum 26 at the top of wall 13 and a steam-and-water drum 25 at the top of wall 12, and wall-cooling tubes 32 from a mud drum 28 to drum 26 providing the walls 14, 13. A row of downcomer tubes 29 lies within the high side wall which is protected by tubes 30 the downcomers and tubes 32 providing for a unidirectional flow of water through the tube bank 27 back to drum 25. The superheater comprises a group of tubes 22 between an inlet header 29 and an intermediate header 20 and another group 23 between header 20 and air outlet header 21. Steam from the boiler enters the pipe conveying steam from the main source of saturated steam to the superheater, a valved byepass to the delivery pipe enabling the superheater to be cut out. The plant is supported by frames comprising columns at each side connected by struts 63, 64. A modification provides a superheater with three groups of transversely arranged tubes and inlet and outlet headers exposed to the furnace gases. In another burners are arranged in the high side wall and the superheater is divided into two sections, the steam flow in the one which is nearer the furnace being parallel to the gas flow and in the other, which comprise multi-loop tubes, being counter to the direction of gas flow.
