403,315. Water-tube steam boilers; heating feedwater. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., Babcock House, Farringdon Street, London.-(Assignees of Jacobus, D. S. ; 95, Harrison Avenue, Montclair, New Jersey, and Behr, R. K. ; 531, East Lincoln Avenue, Mount Vernon, New York, both in U.S.A.) June 28, 1933, No. 18374. Convention date, Dec. 1, 1932. [Classes 64 (i) and 123 (ii).] The steam and water drum 28 of a boiler comprising a main bank of water-tubes 25 across the gas outlet from the combustion chamber 10 is connected to headers at opposite ends of the bank by downtake and uptake circulators 29, 30, defining rear and front walls of an upper portion of the boiler which is divided into upflow and downflow gas passages 40, 41, containing fluid heating surfaces by a partition 33 extending inwardly and upwardly from the rear wall and provided with a row of supporting tubes 25a connected at their upper ends to a header 34 from which a number of tubes 35 lead to the drum. In the form shown the upflow passage contains a steam superheater comprising two sections 45, 46, in series each having horizontal loop tubes with adjoining portions preferably connected to form a unitary structure supported from the circulators 30 and tubes 35 by lugs 47 on the superheater tubes. Steam is supplied from drum 28 by tubes 53 to the inlet header 51. The downflow passage accommodates a water heating surface preferably comprising two sections 60, 61, also of similarly supported horizontal loop tubes and supplied with feedwater at an inlet header 62. The upper section tubes connect directly with the drum. An extension 66 of the partition is carried beyond the circulators 29 to avoid the formation of a dust pocket. In one modification the upflow passage contains a single bank of superheater tubes and an inlet section of water heating tubes through which the feedwater is passed in counterflow to the heating gases. In another a third gas passage is provided leading to an outlet in the top of the boiler and separated from the second by a vertical row of tubes and a partition extending from the top towards the lower portion of the passage. The first upflow passage contains a superheater and the remaining downflow and upflow passages each contain an economizer section of counterflow type.
