Abstract

114,508. Portham, R. S., and Dornan, J. May 5, 1917. U-tube superheaters.-A boiler having one or more upper drums connected to lower drums by banks of tubes across which the furnace gases flow to the uptake is fitted with a superheater having single or multiple-bend U-tube elements, which project between adjacent rows of watertubes in the direction of flow of the furnace gases. The multiple U-tubes 16 connected to headers 14 in a bank of water-tubes 13 of a Yarrow boiler project horizontally into the spaces between the water-tubes. In a modification a divided header is placed horizontally above the water-tubes and multiple U-tubes are arranged between the watertubes in vertical planes. In a superheater fitted in a boiler having upper and lower drums connected by vertical water-tubes, vertical headers are placed in the uptake and the U-tubes are arranged horizontally.
