U-tube and like heaters. - In a water-tube boiler having upper and lower drums 8, 7, connected by crossing groups of water-tubes 9 forming wing combustion spaces 21, in which superheater units 22 are mounted, each superheater unit comprises a nest of elements arranged in cross-section in rectangular formation with the long side closely associated with the lower portion of the boiler tubes, and has one or more headers arranged parallel to the axes of the boiler tubes. The steam may be passed through a superheater 14, mounted in the flue space 13 above the tubes. The double or single U-shaped superheating tube elements project horizontally into the flue spaces and are connected to separate inlet and outlet headers or to divided headers at the front of the boiler. Superheated steam may be taken directly from the outlet header of the primary superheater 14. Fire-resisting places may be placed on the boiler tubes between the elements of the units 22. Baffles may also be so placed on the boiler tubes near the upper drum as to direct the gases inwardly, through the superheating units. In a modification, the side superheating units consist of U-tubes arranged in vertical planes and connected to divided cylindrical headers. Similar additional units may also project into the back of the flue spaces. The boiler tubes near the inner ends of the elements may be removed to allow the gases to impinge on the return bends.
