Water-tube boilers for locomotives and portables engines have U-shaped water-tubes b forming the firebox and a common upper drum a with straight or curved superheater tubes f located between the inner or hot limbs and the outer or cool limbs of the water-tubes and serving to distribute the heating gases. A second superheater g of serpentine or spiral form is provided behind each bank of downcomer limbs c and at the front and back of the boiler. The bends of the U-tubes lie below the grate and communicate with common collectors h from which scale may be blown out. Superheated steam from tubes f is passed through coiled tubes k in the water space of the drum o and is reheated in the superheaters g. Furnace gases pass to the chimney through openings i distributed over a plate l at each side of the boiler. Feedwater may be preheated in a coil 8. In a modification for smaller plants tubular supports v may constitute a receiver for feed-water into which steam mav be introduced, and transmit part of the weight of the boiler as a steadying weight to a vertical engine which is mounted on an extension of the boiler foundation.
