Abstract
389,972. Multitubular steam boilers; superheaters. OSTENS, J., 23, Thornfield Road, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough. May 25, 1932, No. 5143. [Classes 123 (ii) and 123 (iii).] Multitubular returntube boilers have at least one tube 6 of large diameter disposed between a combustion chamber back plate 7 and the back end-plate 2 of the boiler for suspending the combustion chamber from the boiler back. The tube is open to the combustion chamber and large enough to accommodate if desired a superheater tube bank 16, its axis being disposed above that of its furnace flue 4. The tube end may be closed or may open into an induction chamber, separate chambers being provided for each pair of tubes common to each combustion chamber and being connected to a common uptake. In the form shown the superheater elements pass from an inlet header 17a adjacent the lower tube 6 to an outlet header 17b adjacent the upper tube ; separate superheaters may however be disposed in the different tubes ; they may project into the boiler smoke tubes and be connected to supplementary headers in the smoke-box. Superheaters may be disposed in the smoke-box or in the smoke-tubes of an air-heater box and connected to the usual smoke-tube superheaters. The tubes 6 may be oval or rectangular in section and corrugated longitudinally or transversely.
