Abstract

Superheating in two or more stages; watertube boilers.-Steam is superheated in a superheater heated mainly by radiant heat from the combustion chamber of the boiler furnace and in a superheater heated by the combustion products after they have been partly cooled by contact with the water-heating surface of the boiler. A Stirling-type boiler is fitted with a superheater 1 placed behind the first bank of water-tubes and with a superheater 9 placed in the front wall of the combustion chamber out of the direct flow of the combustion products. The superheater 9 consists of tubes 6 encased in cast-iron envelopes 7, which are separated by refractory blocks. The steam pipe 4 connecting the superheaters is extended upwards above the boiler water level to allow the superheater 9 to be flooded at starting up without flooding the superheater 1.
