Compound boilers; heating by direct contact of steam.-The low pressure section of a compound boiler is heated when starting up by steam led from the high pressure section through a superheater into the water space of the low pressure section. In a return-tube boiler, high pressure steam generated in a drum 5 by the circulation of a medium heated in tubes 1 around the furnace is passed through a superheater 9 in the combustion chamber and is then led, at starting, through a pipe 19 containing shut-off valves 20, 21 into the low pressure boiler. The starting high pressure steam may be led through both the high pressure superheater 9 and the low pressure steam superheater 10, the superheaters being suitably connected either in series or in parallel by pipes fitted with shut-off valves. In a locomotive. high pressure steam generated in a firebox section is led off through a smoke-tube superheater into the main boiler.
