Compound boilers; heating by indirect contact of steam.-A compound boiler comprises a lowpressure boiler 1 of the return-tube type and a high-pressure boiler 14 indirectly heated by the circulation of steam generated in tubes 17, 17<a> arranged partly in front of the combustion chamber 23 of the low-pressure boiler and partly in the combustion chamber. The tubes 17 form the side, front and top walls of the firebox of the low-pressure boiler and also a middle wall 18 dividing the firebox longitudinally. The tubes 17<a> are placed in front of a high-pressure steam superheater 24 arranged in the combustion chamber and forming part of its upper rear wall. The low pressure steam is superheated in a fire-tube superheater 6 and in a superheater 25 in the combustion chamber. A pump 31 supplies water from the low-pressure boiler to the high-pressure boiler. The drum of the low-pressure boiler is supported by bands 8 hinged to hollow columns 10, through which heated air is supplied to the furnace from a heater 5. In a modification, the water-tube firebox is placed in front of and opens into the flue tube of the 'return-tube boiler.
