Abstract

235,538. Schmidt'sche Heissdampf- Ges. June 10, 1924, [convention date]. Fire-boxes.-The water-tube fire-box of a locomotive boiler having high and low pressure sections has a duct-like combustion chamber, the walls of which are formed by water-tubes, interposed between the fire-box grate and the smoketubes of a longitudinal boiler comprising the low pressure section. In the form shown, the high pressure section has longitudinal and transverse water chambers 1, 2, one or more steam and water drums 3, and water-tubes 4 which cross each other as they extend upwardly from the chambers 1 on opposite sides of the fire-box. The duct-like combustion chamber is arranged between the rear tube plate of the low pressure section 5 and the grate 6 and has water-tubes 7 connecting lower water chambers 8 with the upper drum or drums. The duct floor is formed by water-tubes 9 connecting the rear transverse chamber 2 with a transverse pipe 10 adjacent to the rear tube plate of the boiler section 5. In a modification, water in the duct walls circulates through a coil arranged in the water space of the drums instead of transferring its heat directly to the water of the high pressure section.
