Abstract

218,492. Hawley, C. G. Dec. 28, 1922. Water chambers in fire-boxes and flues; water-tube boilers; composite boilers.-The combustion space or furnace of a boiler, other than a boiler of the locomotive type, is divided vertically into a number of passages by one or more auxiliary heating and water circulating elements, each of which has a large surface relatively to its cross-sectional area and a water intake part leading upwards to a part of larger cross-section area. The auxiliary element may be of triangular form and of the kind described in Specification 137,093. The auxiliary element b, Fig. 1, fitted in the furnace flue of a marine boiler has its inlet or neck portion d connected to the furnace back sheet e and its longitudinally elongated outlet f connected to the top of the furnace flue. The element may be placed wholly in front of the fire-bridge or in the upper part of the combustion chamber. In boilers of the vertical water-tube type, auxiliary elements are arranged in front of or beneath the boiler drums, and may open into auxiliary drums' placed at right-angles in line with or parallel to the boiler drums. The elements e<4>, Fig. 19, open at their upper ends into the bottom boiler drums c<5>, and at the lower ends into a transverse auxiliary drum h<4>. In boilers of the horizontal. water-tube type, the bottom ends of the auxiliary elements are connected to the mud collectors, and the top ends to auxiliary drums or to the water-tubes. The elements w<2>, Fig. 14, are connected to some of the lower tubes v<2> of a Babcock and Wilcox boiler. In a vertical multitubular boiler an auxiliary element is arranged above the furnace at the front of the boiler. The auxiliary elements may consist of banks of tubes. A horizontal multitubular boiler A, Figs. 3 and 4, has depending banks of water tubes 8 dividing its furnace chamber. The lower ends of the tubes open into a header 6 connected to the boiler by external tubes 7. Specifications 10646//84, 5268/91, and 13423/12 are referred to.
