Water-tube boilers. -In a boiler having banks of horizontal tubes connected to headers, banks of tubes A, B are spaced apart to form the top and bottom of the combustion chamber C, the side and end walls of which are formed of further water tubes. The side walls consist of finned tubes 12 connected to upper and lower headers 13, 14 placed in communication with the main circulation through the drum 27 by downcomer and upflow tubes 32, 33. The end walls consist of finned tubes 17 connected to the headers of the upper and lower tube banks, and of finned tubes 22 connected to headers 23, 24 placed outside the combustion chamber. The tubes 22 are so arranged as to leave spaces for the insertion of the burners 26 for fuel such as pulverized coal between the lower portions of the tubes 17. The headers 23, 24 of the end walls are connected to the drum 27 by downcomer and upflow tubes. Dampers D, E control the passage of the products through the upper and lower tube banks. A superheater may be placed above the upper bank or below the lower bank of tubes. The walls of the combustion chamber may be formed of tubes without fins placed closely together.
