Vertical boilers.-In a boiler having nests of inclined small diameter water tubes d extending across the firebox, additional water tubes e are arranged vertically or at a slight inclination in the firebox at the sides of the cross tubes. The vertical tubes are connected at their upper ends to the firebox crown and at their lower ends to headers h communicating with the boiler water space i or to inwardly projecting water spaces at the bottom of the firebox. The upper ends of the vertical tubes are enlarged to facilitate withdrawal of the tubes through a manhole in the top of the boiler shell. Streams of air or steam supplied through pipes q are so directed above the furnace as to impart a whirling motion to the products of combustion.
