Pulverulent, liquid, and gaseous fuel furnaces. -In a steam generator having a combustion chamber enclosed by water-tubes, an upper drum is connected by downcomers arranged outside the combustion chamber to a water drum disposed at the bottom of the chamber and on the same side so that the whole length of the drums is available for the downcomers. The side, top and bottom walls b, b<1>, d, e are formed of banks of tubes f, f<1>, i, h joined to drums A - - D, the top and bottom banks i, h being inclined in opposite directions. Downcomers m connect the water space of the drum C to the drum D vertically below it, and the steam spaces of the drums A, C are connected by a pipe k. The end walls c are formed of similar banks of tubes n joined between drums E, connected with the drums A, C by pipes o, and lower isolated drums F, the circulation in these banks of tubes being upwards in the tubes nearest the combustion space and downwards in the remainder. The walls are completed by thin fire-brick r, and burners t for pulverulent, liquid or gaseous fuel are arranged over the areas of the top wall, the combustion products passing down over further steam-generating tubes v connected to headers u, u<1> fed from the lower drums B, D and through an air heater or economizer H. In a modification, each wall is lined by a single row of tubes, the tubes of the end walls c having lower headers connected by separate external downcomers to the drum C and upper headers connected to the drums C, D.
