sUPEnHEATEn Beinen.
Application filed January f present invention relates to horizontal return tubular boilers, and particularly to a battery ot such boilers located above a coninion combustion chamber. and the object of my invention is to provide improved means at the rear end of the boilers tor effecting a. proper distribution of' the heating gases along the dili'erent boilers and among the return tlues or tubes ot the different boilers; and to provide ytor a better disposition of, and a better distribution ot the heating gases over, steam superheater elements located at the rear ends ot the boilers.
rlie various 'features of novelty which characterize my invention are pointed out vwith particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this specification; but it'or a better understanding of the invention, how-even'its advantages and specific objects attained with its use, rete-rence should be had tothe accompanying drawings and descriptive matter in which I have illustrated a preterred embodiment ot my invention.
Ot the drawings:
Fig. l is a sectional elevation;
Fig. 2 is a plan view with parts broken away and in section; and
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation with parts broken away and in section.
The boiler installation illustrated in the drawing comprises a battery of horizontal return tubular boilers A arranged side by side, a housing B for the boilers including a common combustion chamber C underlying all of the boilers adjacent their iront ends, and a combustion chamber extension C running to the rear of the boilers where it com-- niunicates through ports E and E2 in a batlle wall E with a chamber D. The chamber D communicates adjacent its upper end with the. return tlues or tubes A of the boilers. and is advantageously extended downward a considerable distance below 'the level of the bottom wall B of the combustion chamber extension C to provide space forv the superheater elements H.
The steam generated in the boilers passes to the inlet header G of the superheater through a pipe F. The inlet header G and the outlet header I ot' the superheater are lnnizontally disposed. and located externally et the boiler housing atthe rear end ot the latter. The elements-H are advantageously ot the Well known Foster type comprising tubes surrounded by externally corrugated 29, m25. serial No. 5,420.
cast iron casings. The individual elements l-*l are connected in pairs at their upper ends by return bends or coupling parts H, located in or on the top wall of the chamber D and advantageously accessible from the exterior oic the boiler housing. Ot each pair of elements thus connected, one has at its lower end a transversely extending portion H2 ccmiected to the header Gr, and the other has at its lower end a transversely extending portion H3 connected to the outlet header I. The transverse end portions H2 and ffl* extend through the rear wall ot the chamber D. The latter is advantageously provided with suitably disposedclean out doors CZ adjacent its lower edge. The headers Gr and l. are `advantageously mounted on pillars K and secured in place by suitable clamping yolres K.
The baffle wall E extends from the roof B2 of' the. boiler housing proper to the iloor B. While l havereferred to the baille wall E as a continueus structure, as it may be, in the construction shown it is formed of sections one at each side of each boiler A, each section being formed with leg or pier portions e one at each side of the corresponding port E. The ports E2 are located between the adjacent leg portions e of adjacent batlle wall sections and each of these ports extends from the combustion chamber floor B to the under side of the boiler A above.
rI"he ported battle wall between the conibust-ion chamber and the chamber D tends to a good distribution of the heating gases across the width of the combustion chamber C and its extension C, and over the superheater elements along the length of the. superheater as a whole. In particular, this ported battle wall avoids the tendency which exists when said wall is not employed for the heating gases to leave the combustion chamber extension C in concentrated streams through the spaces between the boilers A and immediately beneath the housing roolY portion B2. The improved distribution of the heating gases thus obtained, increases the etectiveness of the portion of the boiler heating surface formed by the boiler drums as well as the portion formed by the walls of the return line passages, and also increases the effectiveness of the superheating surface.
The boiler arrangement disclosed was primarily devised, and is especially suitable :tor use in shallow dra-tt river steam boats,
CII
but the invention is obviously not limited to such use.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. The combination with a plurality of side by side horizontal boilers with interna return llue passages and a housing providing a common combustion chamber beneath the boilers and a chamber at the rear end of the boilers through which the heating gases pass from the combustion chamber into .the return line passages of the boilers, ot a baille wall between said chambers formed with a plurality ot' distributed gas ports connecting the chambers.
2. The combination with. a plurality or' side by side horizontal boilers with internal return llue passages and a housing providing a common combustion chamber beneath the boilers and a chamber at the rear end of the boilers through which the heating gases pass from the combustion chamber into the return [lue passages ot the boilers, ot a baltle wall be'- tween said chambers formed with a plurality of distributed gas ports connecting the chambers, and a superheater located in the last mentioned chamber.
3. The combination with a plurality of horizontal return tubular boilers with 1nternal return flue passages and a housing providing a common combustion chamber beneath the boilers and a chamber at the rear end of the boilers communicating at its upper ends with the return flue passages oit thel boilers and extending below the adjacent portion of the combustion chamber, of a wall between said chambers formed with distributed gas ports connecting the chambers,
and a superheater located in said second chamber and comprising vertical tube elements arranged in a series extending horizontally for substantially the full width of the boiler.
l. The combination with a plurality ot horizontal return tubular boilers with internal return liuc passages and a housing providing a combustion space beneath the boilers and a chamber at the rear end of the boilers communicating fat iits'upper ends with the return iue passages ofthe boilers and extending below the adjacent portion o1 the combustion space, a wall between said space and chamber formed with distributed gas ports connecting said space and chamber, and a superheater located in said chamber and comprising vertical tubel elements arranged in a series extending substantially the tull width ot' the boiler, said elements being connected in pairs at their upper ends`
