SUPERHEATER BOILER.

The general object of the present invention is to provide a novel combination of a superheater with a water tube boiler characterized by the effective manner in which the available space in the boiler is utilized to receive the superheater to provide access for cleaning, inspection, and repairs, and in which the superheater is utilized as a portion of the battle means employed to give a desirable path of flow over the superheater and boiler heating surface proper, for the heating gases.
The various features, of novelty which characterize my invention are pointed out with particularity in the claim annexed to and forming a part of this specification. For a better understanding of the invention however, its advantages and specific objects attained with its use, reference as should be had to the accompanying drawings and descriptive matter illustrating a preferred embodiment of the invention.
Of the drawings: Fig. 1 is an elevation, artly in section, of a portion of a boiler em odying my invention; Fig. 2 is a section along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and

In the drawings, A represents the housin of a boiler furnace in the up er portion o f which is mounted a water tube boiler com- 85 prising a mud drum 13, front and rear steam and water drums C and D, respectively, and an upper steam drum E. These drums are all horizontal and parallel to one another. The mud drum B which is adjacent to the 40 rear of the furnace housing is connected to the front steam and water drum C by a bank of inclined Water tubes F. The drums G and D are connected by a bank of water tubes F. The tubes F are approximately horizontal but preferably slope slightly upward from the drum C to the drum D, and are located just below the normal water level. The drums D and B are connected by a bank of water tubes F which are slightly inclined to the vertical to permit the drum B to be located slightly in front of the TQtITWVHll of the boiler housing while the drum D is partially imbcdded inthat wall. The drum E is located appreciably 1 above the bank of tubes F, between the drums G and D, and somewhat nearer to the drum D than to the drum G. The drum E is connected to thedrum G by steam pipes F? and is connected to the drum D by steam pipes F As shown the pipes-F and F comprise body portions adjacent the drum E sloping downward at a slight angle from the horizontal, and portions adjacent the drums C and D, respectively, which are bowed downwardly.
The superheater' is. located in the space between the tubes F and the tubes F and drum E. This superheater as shown is of the Foster corrugated tube type, with the tubes G of U shape and connected at their ends to the superheater inlet and outlet headers G and G respectively, which extend across the boiler housing. The steam pipe IA leading from the top of the steam drum E is connected to the superheater inlet header G at one side of the boiler, and the superheater outlet header G delivers steam to delivery piping (not shown) at either side of the boiler housing. The superheater headers G and G are spaced apart by cast iron spacer elements H distributed at intervals along the length of the headers. Cast iron baffle members I, which may be bolted to the spacer elements H, unite with the superheater headers G and G and with cast iron saddle members J resting on the header G, and with the bricks K supported on said saddle members to form a heating gas deflecting baiile leading downward from the under side of the drum E to or nearly to the topmost tubes F. 'The superheater elements G are also suitably supported and spaced apartby beams L and M and suspension bolts 0. A baiile P resting on the to row of tubes F extends upward from the ac jacent edge of the tube bank F toward the drum C. A baffle P extends vertically upward from the upper edge of the-bathe 1 to the under side of the tube bank F. A bafie 1 immediately beneath the tubes F, extends toward the. rear of the boiler from the battle P. A baiiie R extends along the under side of the tubes F from the front wall of the boiler housing into proximity with the drum B. A battle Q extends upward along the front side of the bank of tubes F from the drum B toward the drum 1). An extension of the baffle P extends vertically across the tube bank F and across the superheater elements G.
and then flow downward between the last mentioned battle and the bafiie formed by the superheater headers G and G and associated" parts. The heating gases then flow partly transversely and partly longitudinally of the tubes F into the bank of tubes F through the space between the upper end of the baflle Q and the drum D. Thence the heating gases flow downward along the tubes F to the heating gas outlet A from the boiler housing, which is immediately to the rear of the drum B. In sweeping around the upper end of the bafile P, the heating gases contact with and travel along the steam tubes F thereby-drying the steam passing from the drum G to the drum E, but the battle formed in part by the superheater headers, prevent the heating gases from flowing along or in contact with the pipes F to any appreciable extent as is desirable since these pipes for the main part serve as pressure equalizers rather than as conduits for steam flow and are not adapted to utilize much heat.
In the intended operation of the boiler the water circulation is up from the drum B 'into the drum C through the tubes F thence across the boiler housing through the tubes F from the drum C to the drum D, from which the water passes downward to the drum B through the tubes F The steam generated in the tubes F is liberated in the drum C and passes from thence to the steam drum E through the steam pipes F Steam generated in the tubes F and F is liberated in the drum D. The steam liberated from the drum D passes tothe drum E through the pipes F but as those skilled in the art will understand, the bulk of the steam generated is liberated in the drum C.
With the described battle and superheater arrangement. the heating gases sweeping upward over the upper edge of the bailie I" contact with the tubes F and impart considerable heat thereto which is desirable for desirable to so ply much-heat thereto. The effectiveness 0? the superheater is enhanced by the flow of the heating gases across the elements G in two transverse passes.
\V'ith the described arrangement there is ample space for inspection of, cleaning and repairs to the superheater between the headers G and G2 and the drum D. Access to this space is had through the doorway A A doorway A provides convenient access to the interior of the furnace adjacent the opposite end of the superheater.
Having now described'my invention, what I claim as new and desire to obtain by Letters Patent, is: 4
The combination with a water tube boiler comprising a steam and water drum and a water drum adjacent one en-d'of the boiler, a second steam and water drum adjacent the opposite end of the boiler, banks of tubes connecting the water drum to each of the steam and water drums, a third bank of tubes connecting the two steam and Water drums, a steam drum parallel to theother drums and located intermediate the ends of the boiler and sufliciently above said third bank of tubes to provide space between sald drum and last mentioned tubes for the hereinafter mentioned superheater headers and having a heating gas outlet adjacent said water drum, and tubes connecting said steam drum to each of said steam and water drums, of a superheater located in the space between the steam drum and said third bank of tubes and comprising headers parallel to and beneath the steam drum and tubular superheater elements secured to said headers and extending from the latter toward said opposite end of the boiler in the space between said third bank of tubes and the steam tubes connecting the steam drum to said second steam and water drum, and hame means including a bafile extending upwardly between the tubes connecting the water drum to the two steam and water drums and across said third bank of tubes, and a baffle formed in part by said headers for causing the heating gases to flow upward toward the last mentioned steam and water drum along the tubes connecting it to the water drum and thence upwardly across anadjacent portion of said third bank of tubes and portions of the superheater elements, and thence downward across the remaining portions of the superheater tubes into said third bank of tubes and thence downward to said outlet through the bank of tubes connecting the first mentioned steam and water drum to the water drum.
