Compound engines; steam supply, methods of.-In a locomotive having a high-pressure firebox boiler 1, a multitubular low-pressure boiler or feed heater 6, and a heater 3 in which interstage steam is heated by high pressure steam superheated in superheaters 2, 5 before and after passing through the heater, to prevent overheating of the superheaters when the steam supply valve 10 is closed, the steam is allowed to pass through a valve 14 under the control of the driver into the water space of the low-pressure boiler. Low-pressure steam from the boiler 6 may be mixed with the interstage steam before it enters the heater, the supply of low-pressure steam being regulated by a valve 13 operated by the driver either directly or by connecting the valve lever to the engine valve-gear lever.
