Abstract

339,897. Burmeister, E. April 24, 1929, [Convention date]. Feedwater, supplying and controlling.- Locomotive boilers having a feedwater heater C and a make-up feedwater evaporator A heated by exhaust, steam from an auxiliary engine are provided with a valve B which cuts off admission of steam to the feedwater heater to determine, a lower limit for the pressure in the, exhaust steam pipe D, and which establishes a connection through a pipe H with a condenser to determine an upper limit. The valve B comprises a piston raised by exhaust steam pressure against the force of a spring which is adjusted to the particular pressure it is desired to maintain in the pipe D. If the heat supplied to the heater C in the form of make-up steam (through pipe F) exhaust steam and possibly condensed exhaust steam (through throttle valve S) is insufficient, the valve prevents the resulting pressure, drop from being communicated to the pipe D. While normally the quantity of steam exceeds that required in the evaporator A, that which cannot be condensed in the evaporator coil R passing to the heater C, excessive steam pressure is prevented by a further rise of the valve piston which connects pipe E with pipe, H leading to a condenser. In a modification valves B, S are combined and placed between a pipe leading from the evaporator coil and a pipe, opening into the connection between the evaporator steam chamber and the heater.
