COMBINED FEED-PUMP AND CONDENSING APPARATUS FOR ENGINES.
SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,009, dated April 1, 1884:. Application filed January 10, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JOHN HOUPT, of Springtown, in the county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Feed-Pumps and Condensing Apparatus for Engines, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention more especially relates to combined feed-pumps for steam-boilers of marine engines, and condensing apparatus for supplying hot fresh water thereto; and it emby means of which the exhaust-steam from the steam-cylinder of the engine is cooled to a temperature a little below that of boiling water, (under a partial vacuum,) to moderate the secondary condenser, and, by retaining a comparatively low temperature in the said secondary condenser, operating to produce a good vacuum in front of the piston of the engine, and to keep up a higher temperature in the steamcylinder than can be practically afforded by the ordinary condensing steam-engine, substantially as described in my said Reissued Letters Patent No. 8,670, April 15, 1879, and in which apparatus, asthere described, pipes are arranged to connect the primary condenser with a hot-well below, and with the secondary condenser, an air-pump being connected with the hot-well, from which hot water may be supplied to any number of steam-boilers, and a circulating-pump being connected with the condensers. Combined with this con-- densing apparatus is the compound-plunger force-pump, having a pipe-connection therewith, controlled by a cook or valve for opening or closing connection,as'required. When it is desired to supply the steam-boilers with hot fresh water at a higher temperature than could be afforded by the ordinary condenser, and thus also economize fuel, said cock is opened and the force-pu mp is operated,wherea by a large portion of the hot water of condensation from the primary condenser may be drawn off and be forced either directly into the hotwell or into the steam-boilers without allowing it to pass through or interfere with the airpump, while the hot vapor from the primary condenser will be drawn by the air-pump into the secondary condenser or save-all, and there be condensed to save the remnant of fresh water-for supplying the boilers, and to produce the desired effect in front of the enginepiston. This compound-plunger force-pump may be the same as that described in my hereinbefore-referred-to Letters PatentNo.285, 622 but it is preferred to arrange its elongated plungers to work both from below or the same side, and so that they will perform their strokes simultaneously in opposite directions, which arrangement will be found much more convenient, and the plungers be made to balance pressure on the receiving-valves of the pure hot water force or feed pump is equalized and overcome.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure represents a vertical section of a combined feed-pump and condensing apparatus embodying my inven tion.
R indicate the primary condenser or moderator, which is here shown double, and'as having surface-condensing cases, which are connected, as at a, with the exhaust pipes or .branches of theengine-cylinder, and with which are connected pipes r r communicating with the hot-(well W below.
S is the secondary condenser or save-all, the upper portion of e which communicates by a pipe, 0", with the pipe r, and its lower portion it will be cooled to a temperature below that of boiling water, (under a partial vacuum,) and the hot water of condensation be caused to drop and pass off through the pipes 1" r into the hot-well W from whence it is drawn by the air-pump T, and forced into the hot-well U for supplying the steam boiler or boilers with hot fresh water. To the left of the figure is shown the force or feed pump for supplying 25"the steam-boilers with hot fresh water at a higher temperature than could be afforded by the ordinary condenser, and whereby a large portion of the hot water of condensation from the primary condenser may, when desired, be drawn off and forced directly into the hot-well U, or into the steam-boilers, without allowing it to pass through or interfere with the airpump T. 'This force or feed pump is attached by a pipe, M, to the pipe 1'', intermediate of said pipe 1- andthe pipe r. This connection M, through which the hot fresh water is drawn by the force-pump, is provided with a cock, P, for regulating or establishing or closing connection with the condensing appara tus, as required. Said force or feed pump, as represented in the drawing, is a compound or double plunger one, similar in its general construction to that described in my Letters Patent No. 285,622, hereinbefore referred to, but in which the elongated plungers B J, instead of being worked one from above and the other from below, and made to move simulta neously in the same direction, are arranged to be worked both from below or the same side, and to move simultaneously in opposite directions, which is a more convenient arrangement generally, and provides for a balancing action of the plungers, and readier operation of them, as hereinbefore specified.

The two plungers B J serve to keep up a constant supply of hot fresh water supplied by condensation from the primary condenser and force it into the boiler or boilers, as hereinbefore described, the cock P being opened for the purpose.
Connecting the cylinder F, subject to control by a cock, N, with the upper end of the secondary condenser S or pipe 1, leading thereto, is an upwardly inclining or elevating pipe, 0, for drawing off the accumulated hot pure vapor from the compound-plunger pump by the air-pump T of the compound condensing apparatus, and thereby utilizing said hot vapor, instead of allowing it to become an annoyance in equalizing and overcoming back-pressure on the receiving-valves of the compound purehot-water feed-pump.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In condensing and boiler-feeding apparatus for steam-engines, in which a primary and a secondary condenser are used, the combination, with the primary condenser or moderator for direct application to or connection with the engine-cylinden and arranged intermediately of said cylinder and the secondary condenser, and with a feed or. force pump in controllable connection with the duct which passes off the hot water of condensation from the primary condenser, of a pipe or duct in controllable connection with said force or feed pump and with the secondary condenser, for drawing off accumulated hot pure vapor from the pump, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of a compound condensing apparatus in which a primary condenser or moderator. and a secondary condenser are used, and a compound plunger, force, or feed pump adapted to supply to the boiler or boilers of an engine hot fresh water of condensation from the primary condenser, essentially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
8. The combination, with the pipes M O and valves L N P, with the pump barrel or ehamber F, of a compound-plunger pump, the primary condenser or moderator R B, pipes r r r, the secondary condenser or save-all S, the ail-pump T, and hot-wellNV below, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a combined condensing and boiler-feeding apparatus, the combination, with the cylinder-A of the pump, the elongated plunger B, and the outlet and check valves 0 G, of the auxiliary pump-cylinderF, elongated plunger J, and valve L, the plungers B and J being adapted both to work from. the same side of the pump, and to make their strokes simultaneously in opposite directions, essentially as specified.
