Feedwater, supplying and controlling. - The feed-water supply of a locomotive boiler is regulated in accordance with the partial vacuum in the smokebox. The feed pump comprises a cold water pump 1 and hot water pump 2 driven from the engine mechanism. Cold water is drawn through a pipe 4 and delivered by the pump 1 to a jet condenser 3 supplied with exhaust steam. The heated water passes through the pump 2, which delivers it through valve 5 to the boiler. A regulating valve 6, Fig. 2, comprises a valve member 7 controlled by a diaphragm or piston 8 and spring 9. The chamber 11 is connected by a pipe 10 to the blast pipe 17, so that the passage through a by-pass pipe 12 connecting the suction and pressure sides of the pump 1 is controlled by the suction pressure in the pipe 17. The valve 6 is arranged so that water can flow along the spindle into the chamber 11 and pipe 10, thus preventing the entrance of soot, flue dust, &c. In an alternative form, the valve 6 may control the supply of steam to a steam feed pump.
