Abstract

Compressed-air engines. - The steam or other fluid-pressure supply of reciprocating engines or turbines is mixed by means of injectors with air at substantially the same temperature. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 applied to a locomotive, the air is supplied by means of a cone to a pipe 4 passing in a sinuous manner lengthwise through the boiler to a chamber 6 through which it is drawn past a spring-pressed non-return valve 8 by an injector 2 worked by the boiler steam. The mixed steam and hot air passes by pipe 3 to the cylinders. The cone 10 may be pivoted to provide for reverse running, or a second cone 11, controlled by dampers 12, 13 may be provided. In a modification, the tube is in the form of a helix and may be arranged in the fashion of a superheater. A duplex arrangement of injectors is provided. The coil 4 may contain a superheating-coil.
