Abstract

450,626. Regulating fuel supply to locomotive furnaces. KRUPP AKT.-GES., F., Essen, Germany. Nov. 6, 1935, No. 30681. Convention date, Nov. 9, 1934. [Class 51 (i)] In a mechanically-fired steam locomotive in which the fuel supply is automatically controlledinaccordance with the steam consumption, the rate of supply of fuel is determined directly by the pressure of the exhaust steam from the engine. In one form, Fig. 1, a burner 10 is supplied with oil through a pipe 11 and with steam from a pipe 14. Pipes 11 and 14 are regulated respectively by valves 12 and 15 having slides 20 and 16 connected to diaphragms 21 and 17 which are acted upon by the pressure within pipes 22 and 18 connected to the blast pipe 19. In another form, Fig. 2, a screw feeder 24 for pulverized fuel and a blower are driven by a turbine 23 actuated by the exhaust steam from the engine 25. Variations in boiler pressure due to weather conditions is avoided by means of a pipe 26 connected in parallel with the turbine and controlled by a valve 27 in accordance with the steam pressure in a pipe 31 connected with the boiler.
