Abstract

279,500. Smoot, C. H. Oct. 22, 1926, [Convention date]. Regulating combustion.-In steam boiler furnaces provided with travelling grates, a change in the load on the boiler produces automatically a change in the speed of the grate and also changes in the air supply to different sections of the grate in succession, the pressure of the air supply being temporarily changed until the change in the speed of the grate produces the required length of fire for the changed load. A change in the boiler load acts through a master regulator K to change fluid pressure in pipes L1, L2, L3 leading to regulating devices M, I, R. The pressure of the air supplied by the engine D through the duct H and valves E1, E2 to different sections of the grate C is communicated to one side of a diaphragm M1 the other side of which is exposed to atmospheric pressure. This diaphragm is connected by a rod M4 to a diaphragm M2, exposed on its upper surface to the atmosphere and on its lower surface to the pressure in the pipe L1, and to a diaphragm M3 exposed to the atmosphere on one side and to the pressure in the pipe L2, on its other side through the medium of a viscous fluid the supply of which to the diaphragm chamber N4 is controlled bv a valve regulating the size of the orifice N2. The rod M4 is also connected to the valve controlling the supply of steam to the engine D. Upon a change in load taking place the rod M4 is actuated to vary the speed of the engine D but is brought back to its normal position as fluid passes through the orifice N2 to the diaphragm M3. The valves E1, E2 - - are operated in succession by a cam-plate P connected to a diaphragm 11 exposed on opposite sides to the pressure in the furnace on opposite, sides of the boiler, and to a diaphragm 12 exposed to the pressure in the pipe L2 of the master control K and to the atmosphere. The steam supply to the engine B operating the grate is controlled by the joint action of a governor R2 and a diaphragm R1 exposed to fluid pressure in the pipe L3 of the master control, both of which actuate through a system of rods and levers the steam, supply valve, S of the engine B.
