Abstract

Regulating combustion.-In a furnace in which the fuel and air supply or draught are maintained in constant ratio, such ratio is varied automatically in accordance with the nature of the waste gases. Apparatus for carrying out this method of regulation comprises a chamber 10 containing a diaphragm 12 opposite sides of which are exposed to fluid pressure supplied through pipes 8, 9 by a pivoted jet tube 5, the position of which is controlled by a spring 6 and the pressure in the boiler steam pipe 1 acting through the diaphragm 3 and contact rod 4. A second chamber 14 is provided with a diaphragm 19 opposite sides of which are exposed to pressures on opposites sides of a diaphragm 17 in the flue 18 (in which the flow is downwards) through pipes.15, 16. Movement of the diaphragms 12, 19 is communicated to a pivoted jet tube 13 through a contact rod connected to the diaphragm 12 and through a contact rod 20, lever 21 and adjustable contact 23 connected with the diaphragm 19. According to the position of the jet tube 13 the supply of fluid through the pipes 25, 26 to opposite sides of the piston 28 is varied and the damper 29 regulated accordingly. The differential flue pressure is also communicated through pipes 40, 41 to opposite sides of a diaphragm 32, while in the case of gas-fired apparatus pressures on opposite sides of a diaphragm in the fuel supply pipe is communicated through pipes 38, 39 to opposite sides of a diaphragm 33. The two diaphragms 32, 33 are adapted to actuate a jet tube 34 as described above and operate a piston 45 controlling by means of a switch 46 the supply of fuel. A contact 36 adjusted by a CO2 or other meter actuated by the nature of the waste gases is interposed between the jet tube 34 and lever 35 so that the ratio between the fuel supply and air supply or draught is varied by the nature of the gases. In coal-fired apparatus with a moving grate a pump is connected with the grate drive and pressure in accordance with the rate of supply is utilized in the apparatus.
