Regulating combustion.-In a steam-boiler furnace installation, the supply of steam to the engines operating the blowers and the mechanical stokers is controlled by a member loaded by a weight or the like which is opposed by the pressure of steam from the boiler and the pressure of a source of fluid under pressure. The control member 69 consists of a valve 71 loaded by a weight 75 and subjected to steam pressure from boilers 3, 4 acting on a piston 73 connected by a rod 72 to the valve and to a source of fluid pressure 76. Fluid pressure from the control member is led through valve-controlled pipes 77, 78 to diaphragm boxes 87, 88 and 89, 90 respectively, the loading of which is controlled by adjusting the valves 91, 92, 93, 94 and the fluid-leakage valves 99, 100, 101, 102. The steam-supply valves 45, 46 of the engines driving the blowers 41. 42 are connected by rods 57, 58 to diaphragms 49, 50 subjected to the differential pressure of the air flowing in the open and Venturi portions of the air-supply conduits 37, 38 and to the loaded diaphragms 55, 56 of the boxes 87, 88. The steam-supply valves 33, 34 of the engines 17, 18 driving the mechanical stokers are connected by rods 31, 32 to the loaded diaphragms 35, 36 and to levers 29, 30 mounted on fulcrums 27, 28 and connected to the governors 19, 20.
