Abstract
198,564. Schmidt, W. June 14, 1922. Driving-arrangements for screw propellers.- Steam power plant for surface and submerged running of submarines has the beat accumulaters arranged so that all or the greater part of the heat for superheating is utilized to superheat the intermediate steam. The heat accumulator which produces steam and also superheats steam contains hot water at a pressure of at least 30 atmospheres. Each propeller shaft a, Fig. 1, is direct driven by a quadruple expansion sixcylinder reciprocating steam engine A, and a low pressure turbine B can be coupled thereto by clutches E and gearing D. Oil fired boilers F, F<1>, produce steam at 60 atmospheres, and contain two superheaters one for the generated steam and one for intermediate steam. When travelling on the surface, the boilers supply steam to the hot-water heat-accumulating tanks J<1>, J<2>, J<3>, K<1>, K<2>, Fig. 5. For submerged running after the boiler is ineffective, steam is taken from the tanks J<1>, J<2>. J<3>, passed through reducing valves to superheating coils M<1>, M<2> in the tanks K<1>, K<2> and then supplied by pipes c to the engines A. The intermediate coil superheater N<1>, N<2> receive heat from the tanks K<1>, K<2>, condensation products returning thereto by pipes f. Feed water tanks L<1>, L<2>, L<3> are coupled to the condenser C. The heat accumulators mav also be used for superheating the steam between the two lower stages of expansion when travelling on the surface.
