741,701. Forced flow and composite steam boilers; steam raising in boilers. DURRWERKE AKT.-GES. Oct. 13, 1953 [Oct. 13, 1952], No. 28159/53. Class 123(2). A boiler of a unit power plant comprising a turbine 9 has a main steam generating section of the forced flow or natural circulation type and a separately operable forced flow section of a size suited to the minimum load or starting-up requirements of the turbine. In Fig. 1, the main boiler section is of the forced flow, once through type, a pump 1 feeding water through valves 17, 2 for flow through an economiser section 3, a radiant steam generating section 4, a transition section 5 and radiant and convection superheaters 6, 7, superheated steam passing to turbine 9 through valve 8. The minimum load section of the boiler consists of corresponding heating surfaces 3a ... 7a to which water can be fed through valve 13 and from which steam passes to the turbine through valve 14, a separate furnace 16 being provided to heat superheater sections 6a, 7a. During starting, the main section is filled with water, valve 8 being closed and valve 11 in a line 10 opened. Water is pumped through sections 3a ...7a and discharges through a valve 15, valve 14 being closed. Furnace 16 is started and, when steam at the required pressure is generated, valve 15 closed and valve 14 opened to admit the steam to the turbine. When the latter has heated sufficiently the main section is fired and connected with the turbine, furnace 16 then being stopped. If the turbine load decreases to 5 per cent of the maximum, its steam demand is met economically by shutting down the main furnace, restarting furnace 16 and adjusting the valves so that the turbine receives only the steam flow from section 3a ...7a. Fig. 5 shows the invention applied to a natural circulation boiler comprising a steam and water drum 20 to which water is fed through economizer 3 and from which steam flows through superheaters 6, 7. As before, a parallel flow path through sections 3a, 6a, 7a is provided constituting the minimum load, forced flow section of the boiler.
