Abstract

1486569 Controlling boilers BABCOCK & WILCOX CO 3 Sept 1974 38463/74 Heading F4A [Also in Division G3] A power generating system comprising two boilers and a single turbine has each boiler controlled by a demand signal produced by providing a total desired output signal and a ratio controller responsive to this total signal to generate the individual boiler demand signals. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 the boilers are shown as A and B and include a furnace 20, primary and secondary superheaters 21, 12 and an interstage reheater 13. The turbine 8 has a high pressure stage 9 and a low pressure stage 10 and drives a generator 11. The steam after passing through the low pressure stage is condensed and pumped through low pressure heater 16, de-aerating heater 17 to the feed pumps 18 for the respective boilers. In the control system shown in Fig. 3, a demand signal is generated corresponding to the desired energy output and this is converted in master controller 30 into a total boiler demand signal. The ratio control 32 provides a demand signal for boilers A and B which are used in the respective feed water, firing rate and reheat flow controls. In general there are limits on the various parameters which are used in the boiler operation and by a "least wins" arrangement, the actual individual boiler demand signal is limited and the output of the other boiler will be increased to compensate. If the operation of the limiting factors on both boilers means that the total demand cannot be met then after a time delay the demand signal in system 28 is reduced to meet the actual system operation condition. The temperature of the steam at the turbine throttle valve may be used to modify the response of the individual boilers to their own demand signal. The monitoring and control of the feedwater supply is described and also forms the subject of Specification 1,486,570. Details of the firing rate and reheat controls are given.
