Abstract

Superheating by steam; controlling superheat. -In apparatus for superheating steam for power plants bv means of steam generated in a separate boiler, the heating steam may pass at excessive pressure or temperatures through a heatexchanger situated, say, in the water space of the main boiler, the condensate from the exchanger returning to the separate boiler. Heating steam generated in a boiler consisting of tubes 3, Figs. 1 and 2, connected to upper and lower drums 1, 2., and arranged at the back of the combustion chamber of a marine boiler passes through a manually operated valve 18 into coils 21 in the main boiler. Condensate returns through a pipe 22 connected to the lower drum. When the valve 18 is closed, the steam flows through a pipe 23 to the superheater. A safetyvalve 25 on the heating-steam pipe discharges into the steam space of the main boiler. The generator of heating steam may be so built into the combustion chamber of a water-tube boiler as to subdivide the chamber. The manually operated valve 18 may be replaced by a valve, Fig. 8, opened by the pressure of the heating steam acting against the compression of a spring 35. The tubular valve member 30 slides in a seating 29 having two rows of ports 31. The heat-exchanger may be placed in a feed-water heater or in a heat-storage vessel.
