Abstract
423,095. S t e a m s u p e r h e a t e r s. TURNER, C. S., 2000, 2nd Boulevard, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. April 21, 1933, No. 11698. [Class 123 (iii)] In a superheater exposed to direct radiant heat and comprising passages for cooling water or other fluid, the superheating tubes 14, Fig. 2, form the walls of the cooling passages 16, or the heat bridging between the tubes and the passages is otherwise made integral with or welded to the walls of both the tubes and the passages, and the supply of cooling fluid is throttled or controlled at the inlet to the passages. The tubes 14 may be spaced apart, the space 16 being closed by parts integral with the tubes, or the tubes may be welded to the inner or outer surface of a comparatively large tube, which may be recessed to receive the smaller tubes. The steam may flow through the centre passage and the cooling fluid through the surrounding tubes. Superheating and cooling tubes or passages may be arranged in a bundle, or they may be arranged in line with one another along a furnace wall. Cooling water is supplied to the cooling passages of a superheater 13, Fig. 1, on the front wall of a boiler from the lower drum 35 under the control of a valve 40<1>, which is operated by a thermostat 38 in the steam outlet pipe. The upper ends of the passages are connected to the boiler steam space by a pipe 12. When starting, water is admitted to the passages through a byepass valve 40.
