Abstract

22,912. Aspinall, F. B. Oct. 17. Engines working on special systems or cycles. -A method of working with steam, stated to be applicable also to air and other fluids, consists in using superheated steam with admission during the whole or nearly the whole stroke, the fluid being at a large volume per unit of weight. The steam may be used in a closed cycle. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 6, steam is superheated in a superheater 4, loss by leakage being supplied by a boiler 1, or otherwise. The steam from the superheater passes through the engine 9 and then through the jacket 11 of the pipe leading to the superheater. The steam passes from the jacket 11 to the cooler 15<b>, which cools the steam to the saturated state. The steam is then compressed in the compressor 19 to the admission pressure of the steam-engine, and forced back into the superheater. At starting, the water in the cooler 15<b> may be heated by steam admitted by a cock 14. Governing may be effected by regulating the temperature in the cooler, thus altering the back pressure, or by regulating the amount of steam in circulation in the system.
