Abstract

378,235. Motor power plant. WHITE, W. A. and WHITE'S MARINE ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., Prince Consort Road, Hebburn-on-Tyne. Sept. 16, 1931, No. 25977. [Class 110 (iii).] In a power plant comprising a triple expansion engine exhausting to a turbine the working fluid from the engine is reheated before entering the turbine. The Figure shows a steam plant in which a boiler C supplies steam to two reciprocating engines A1, A2 and in each unit the exhaust steam passes from the L.P. cylinder h to the reheater k, around which circulate the boiler waste gases, before passing to a changeover valve o, which may operate automatically, and being directed either to a forward r or reverse section s of a turbine. A pipe t then leads the exhaust to a condenser. The turbine drives a power shaft B through triple reduction gearing, and the reciprocating engine drives shaft B through single reduction gearing. In an alternative arrangement the steam may be reheated electrically, and current may be generated for this purpose by a dynamo driven by the turbine. The turbine may be unidirectional, the change-over valve leading steam either to the turbine or to the condenser. The dynamo driven by the turbine may supply power to auxiliary machinery. Mechanical gearing may be replaced by electrical or hydraulic gearing. The steam from the boiler may be initially superheated and re-heated from stages of expansion in the cylinders.
